From October 2024, the 5th Special Forces Regiment will expand its capabilities to include a new K9 unit made up of special forces operators and service dogs trained to handle challenging and stressful situations. These dogs, known as Multi-Purpose Canine (MPC) service dogs, are carefully selected and trained for a range of challenging tasks, including detection and apprehension. Their skills support Special Operations Forces (SOF) teams, such as Counter Terrorism (CT) units and Strike Airborne Groups, in a wide range of special operations.
      Key K9 skills include an advanced sense of smell and a strong bite, which are critical in identifying and eliminating threats. The dogs are prepared to operate in a variety of environments, including rappelling from helicopters, parachuting and amphibious boat operations.
      The addition of the K9 capability is in line with NATO SOF standards, where service dog units are an important part of operational readiness. The integration of this specialised capability into national SOF is intended to enhance the safety and effectiveness of operations.
      The K9 unit plays a key role in protecting team members from hidden threats such as improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and concealed weapons. The dogs also assist in neutralising high-value targets during direct action. In certain cases, K9s may also be deployed on NATO missions as part of a Special Operation Task Group (SOTG).
